The residents of Liwa were demanding action from the authorities to address the "pollution problem" created by industries located in the port area. The Liwa residents demanded the sacking of local officials and an immediate solution to the pollution problem, which they claimed has taken a severe toll on the health of residents and even forced some residents to leave villages located near the port.
